Myrna Pond  RN, BNSc, MSc (Teaching)

Myrna Pond is a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Public Health Nursing, a Bachelor’s in Nursing Science, and a Master’s in Science (Health Teaching). She has completed four internships in counselling with the Canadian Association for Pastoral Education, and has over 1,000 hours of supervised sessions. Following a ten-year career in public health involving teaching, counselling, and health promotion, in particular working with immigrants and refugees to find healthy identities, she moved into an active role as a counsellor for eleven years. The internships with C.A.P.P.E. were based on the theoretical orientation of Carl Rogers, yet taught and practiced a full spectrum of therapeutic interventions, including cognitive-based techniques.

During these years with the Community Counselling Centre (previously the Pastoral Counselling Centre), Myrna received certification with Myers-Brigg Personality Preferences testing services, has trained and has extensive experience with dream workshops, primarily in a Jungian vein, and has co-facilitated the yearlong course at the Counselling Centre for “People Who Work With People”. This has been the primary psycho educational program for the public who are interested in therapy but not necessarily proceeding to the internship program. Further, Myrna and her husband, Robert, co-led 9 years of marriage preparation weekend courses for couples. With an average of 10 couples per weekend (14 hours) and at least 25 weekends, they estimate that they have started 250 couples with skills in communication, sexuality, conflict management, spirituality (rituals) and family of origin work. Myrna works with clients in an empowerment model believing that a person has mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health concerns. With all clients, family of origin work is a foundation for all future work. She works on a contractual basis towards goals to which a client can commit. Clients find her most helpful with bereavement issues, coping with health and adjustment concerns, in care-giving positions looking at boundary-setting, emotional awareness and release in family dynamics, and systemic change. Individual, family, and couple counselling as well as employment concerns have all been initial referral patterns.
