Intense Relationship Therapy

Intense Relationship Therapy is delivered in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.

Why intense relationship therapy?

1)    It works well!  You will be more likely to benefit from a concentrated 15 hour focus on your issue than conventional one hour therapy once a week.  According to John Gottman’s review of the research on successful therapeutic intervention, couples benefit from more clinical hours when they start therapy than in the conventional once a week, one hour model of clinical service.  You will receive the equivalent of 15 weeks of conventional relationship therapy in two days.

2)    You are likely to benefit from the emotional intensity and rhythm of work, settle, work, settle, rest and consolidate.  John Gottman’s review of the research on successful therapeutic intervention with couples indicates that couple’s benefit from therapists being able to assist the couple to safely focus upon the emotional aspects of their issues with each other.  This is consistent with Susan Johnson’s outcome research.

3)    You are in crisis and cannot wait for a therapist that has the qualifications that you need.

4)    You want to have the confidence that your therapist has the necessary experience, training and uses and delivers effective methods of assistance.

5)    You do not have a relationship therapist in your community that possesses the necessary experience and training or who uses and delivers effective methods of assistance.

6)    You are in relationship therapy but are not moving ahead in the way you wish.

7)    You have privacy to maintain and would prefer to go out of your community or have a professional come into your community.

  9. If counselling has begun and is terminated because of a direct or indirect threat or intimidation toward one of you or me, there will be no refund.
  10.  During intensive relationship therapy if either of you or both, have an issue or fear related to Mike and his methods, he will take you seriously and he will attempt to find an accommodation or a means to repair the relationship. Just as you struggle with each other you may struggle with Mike at times. He will adjust and attempt a pace that maintains psychological safety for both of you.  It is possible that you will still not be comfortable with this intensive therapy.  This is a risk, in addition to outcome certainty of any therapy. These relationship sensibilities cannot be assessed before therapy begins.  If you choose to prematurely end the therapeutic relationship with Mike there will be no refund.
  11.  Despite the confidence Mike has in his understanding of relationship and his therapeutic approach, humility comes from knowing that the human condition creates factors that he cannot know and will move some couples toward success while others will experience failure.  Mike states the obvious when he says that he cannot be responsible for the outcome of relationship success or failure but he promises to devote his attention and efforts to make your relationship work until you tell him that your relationship will not work.
  12.  A presently active affair, a recent unreported affair, active drug and alcohol abuse, active suicidal or homicidal intent and male directed violence or intimidation contraindicate relationship therapy. This information should be provided before a decision is made to arrange for intensive relationship therapy. The presence of these factors will likely result in a premature ending of service if they are discovered during onsite assessment or therapy.  Attempts or threats to harm or kill one’s self or the occurrence or reoccurrence of any of the above issues during relationship therapy could also result in premature ending of intensive relationship therapy. There will be no refund.  All of these issues must be assessed before intensive relationship therapy begins.  A verbal or written opinion of a family doctor, local counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist may be required to proceed and may delay the timing of the intensive relationship therapy or terminate plans for the therapy.
