Training and Clinical Resources for Couple's Therapist

As a Certified Gottman Couples' Therapist and couples' therapist for over 25 years I have a number of ways that I may be of assistance to your clients and to you or your colleagues.

 Couples' Workshop

The Art & Science of Love Couples' Workshop is a weekend adult education retreat designed to provide couples with the skill sets of the masters of relationship.  Couples receive multimedia lectures laced with humour supported by live, scripted leader role plays and real life videos that demonstrate the do’s and don’ts of relationship success.  The couples are guided step by step into encounters with each other that rekindle friendship and offer alternative conflict management that promotes mutual understanding and movement forward on difficult issues.  Couples work privately using their own issues with the assistance of roving highly trained therapists that assist stuck couples to move forward and practice the skill sets being offered.  This finely tuned workshop has been delivered to over 10,000 couples over a ten year period and has outcome equivalency to two years of couples counselling.  We have couples reporting benefits from those that are there for enrichment to those that are on the brink of breaking up.  By way of example the manager of a facility that provided lodging for attending couples meet me on the second day of the workshop and said I don’t know what you did but there is a real positive difference between the couples that I met at registration and the same couples that I met last evening.

Intensive Couples' Intervention Second Tier Couples’ Therapist

I worked clinically with people since 1984 and full time since 1989.  With a case load of 35 to 40 hours a week since 1989 I have delivered over 10,000 clinical hours to couples and in the last ten years I specialized in couples therapy first receiving my Gottman certification and moving on to study under today’s greats including Susan Johnson and Les Greenberg.

There are times when your clients will have received couples counselling that has not met the mark of helpfulness.  I would like you to consider me as a second tier therapist.

Couples can access me for a block of hours or days.  I complete 3 hours of assessment and goal planning with my clients before I begin intervention.  If I am a second tier counsellor I also assess success and failure in their previous couples' counselling  to avoid repetition of unhelpful approaches and identify progress.  I will not be successful with every couple but I have never had a couple from “away” tell me it was not worth their time and resources.

If you need to know me more personally, call and we can chat. I know you need to have confidence in me before you refer.

Couples’ Therapist Training in Gottman Methods

Gottman couples therapy has been evolving and this has given me great confidence in their approach.  The Gottman’s like you and me are willing to learn from other therapists. The Sound Relationship House is a theory of relationship that is complex and based on 30 years of research.  I consider it a useful primer for every couples’ therapist.  John Gottman’s recent inclusion of trust and commitment in their model is an acknowledgement of key components that need to be present for relationship to work. He went back through his research to see if he could identify these processes; see john Gottman’s book “The Science of Trust” for more information.  Trust and commitment are also elements that suffer damage and must be repaired before relationship can function well.  With this shift in thinking attachment theory and the sound relationship house became more in-sync.

About the Workshop

When couples enter the therapy office, they sting with pain and despair. They look to the clinician to referee chronic conflicts, fix their partners, and rebuild burned bridges. Now, based on Dr. John Gottman’s 35 years of compelling research with over 3,000 couples, there’s a practical, scientifically sound and highly effective approach to guiding these couples across the chasm that divides them.

In this workshop, Mike Fidler MSW RSW provides a research-based road map for helping couples to compassionately manage their conflicts, deepen their friendship and intimacy, and share their life purpose and dreams.

Demonstration, didactics and discussion center on Dr. Gottman’s breakthrough research of what makes relationships work, and teach theoretically grounded methods of assessment and intervention.

What You Will Learn

This inspirational two-day workshop is designed to immediately empower your work as a couples’ therapist. Clinicians who take this workshop will be equipped with new methods and tools to help couples break the cycle of criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling. Through demonstrations and videos from the clinical office, you’ll see how to apply the research-based principles and interventions of Gottman Method Couples Therapy, including:

  1. New research-based assessments and effective interventions to help understand couples’ struggles
  2. Research-based strategies and tools to help couples successfully manage conflict
  3. Skills that empower couples to dialogue about their worst gridlocked issues
  4. Methods to help couples process their fights and heal their hurts
  5. Techniques for couples to deepen their intimacy and minimize relapse.

Workshop Objectives

Clinicians will gain new skills in assessment, intervention and relapse prevention, and dramatically increase effectiveness in helping couples manage conflicts and strengthen friendship and intimacy.

 Participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize the research that allows prediction of future relationship stability with 94% accuracy
  2. Describe the seven levels of the Sound Relationship House theory
  3. Conduct a couple’s therapy assessment using elements of the couple’s narrative, the Oral History interview, written questionnaires, observations of conflict, and individual interviews
  4. Describe two interventions for each: to help strengthen a couple’s management of conflict, to enhance a couple’s friendship system; and to explore a couple’s system of shared meaning.
